I am so glad I joined Coronado Island Fitness run club! What a great group of people with just the right amount of motivation needed for me to stick with it. It’s fun and there are all levels of runners in the club so, as a newbie, I don’t feel like I am slowing people down. In addition to helping me prepare for the ½ marathon I signed up for, I have also met some genuinely nice people that I enjoy being around. Thank you George, Natasha and Coronado Island Fitness! – Leslie Althof

Thank You Linda!

Testimonial of Linda Copp, MS, RD

I became a member of Island Fitness approximately 10 years ago. After 30 years of unidirectional movement (limited to forward motion) as a long-distance runner, I felt it a novel idea to introduce lateral challenges to the muscles. Moreover, I had completed the necessary research on the loss of muscle mass as we age and was focused on nipping that puppy in the bud at a young age!! I intended to initiate this new program with reduced risk of injury (and pain!) and thus solicited the assistance of the personal trainer present at that time at Island Fitness. After several sessions, he provided a variety of exercises that I could employ each time at the facility. I felt empowered!!! And my muscle groups were grateful. I noticed changes within a few weeks in terms of strength, mobility, flexibility and muscle tone. I was definitely morphing into a gym babe.

Your Best, First Step for 2012!

There is one new positive approach to improving your health in the New Year that can be provide immediate results … replace all soda consumption with pure water! Is making the switch from soda to water really that big of a deal?  Let’s see…

I came across a very interesting and shocking article, written by Dr. Joseph Mercola regarding one of this country’s most commonly consumed food products.  Although, calling it a food is a stretch as the nutritional component is basically non-existent.  The average American consumes …57 gallons of soda a year, over 600 standard 12 ounce cans or about the same volume of liquid as in a barrel of oil!  Yikes, that’s a lot of soda!  (and plastic)

Tis’ the season to ACTIVATE!

We see the lights, smell the familiar fragrances and our favorite shops are decorated with all things seasonal.   The Holiday Season is afoot and what a wonderful time for family, reflection and service!

For most of us, although grateful for this time to spend with family and friends, there is a down side. All of the opportunities for enjoying (too much) Holiday fare and the extra demands on our time during the Holidays, stand ready to drain us of all our motivation to stay healthy and active.  We know we are in trouble when we start to hear those little words in our heads… “it’s okay…we have a New Year’s Resolution Plan.”  To that I say “Bah Humbug!” Resolutions are all hype and little substance. How else can we explain the familiar, sad pattern:  a “get back in shape” mentality that floods gyms and health clubs somewhere around Jan 2nd and slowly ebbs to a trickle somewhere around February 1st?

Instead of “Resolving” this holiday season, “Activate” this season – go against the grain with the ‘180 degree principle’:  do what most everyone else is not. Here’s how: Read More…

FITNESS AND NUTRITION – Rev it Up!

Fitness and nutrition are forever paired. The only way to achieve lasting results in a fitness program is to couple exercise with sound nutritional practices. So how do we make sense of the mountain of nutrition information out there?  Nutritionists are increasingly focusing on the ratio of macro nutrients.

Our metabolism is a life-sustaining series of chemical reactions which occur within our bodies.  Simply put, our metabolism converts nutrients (calories from food) into energy.   Metabolic energy is used to fuel everything from our involuntary functions, such as breathing and digestion, to more complex voluntary movements involving our muscular skeletal system. When our bodies are young and growing our metabolisms are firing on all cylinders, using energy as fast as we can take it in. Our bones, muscles and organs are all growing at impressive rates and our bodies have to provide energy for these growth processes. As we age these processes gradually slow…so, if we want to maintain the highly active calorie-burning processes of our youth, we have to rev up our activity levels!   Here are some suggestions to help maintain a highly active and healthy metabolic system – keeping us strong and healthy.
